Background of the Study

The transportation sector is one of the most hazardous industries, with bus drivers facing multiple occupational risks, including road accidents, long working hours, poor ergonomics, and exposure to environmental hazards (Okeke & Ibrahim, 2023). In Nigeria, commercial bus drivers often work under high-pressure conditions, leading to stress, fatigue, and increased vulnerability to injuries.

In Borno State, road transport is a vital mode of movement, but poor road conditions, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and high traffic congestion contribute to frequent driver injuries. Common injuries among bus drivers include musculoskeletal disorders from prolonged sitting, whiplash injuries from sudden braking, and trauma from accidents (Olawale & Yusuf, 2024). This study seeks to examine the prevalence and causes of injuries among bus drivers in Borno State and suggest strategies to enhance their occupational safety.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of bus drivers in transportation, their occupational health risks are often overlooked. Many bus drivers in Borno State work in unsafe conditions, exposing them to frequent injuries. Poor vehicle maintenance, driver fatigue, and inadequate road infrastructure further increase accident risks (Adebayo, 2023).

Previous research has focused on road safety from a general perspective, but limited studies specifically examine the injury rates among bus drivers in Borno State. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing the nature, causes, and frequency of injuries sustained by bus drivers.

Objectives of the Study

1. To determine the prevalence of injuries among bus drivers in Borno State.

2. To examine the common causes of injuries among bus drivers.

3. To propose interventions to enhance the safety and well-being of bus drivers.

Research Questions

1. What are the most common injuries sustained by bus drivers in Borno State?

2. What factors contribute to high injury rates among bus drivers?

3. What measures can be implemented to improve the safety of bus drivers?

Research Hypotheses

1. Bus drivers who work longer hours experience more injuries than those with regulated work schedules.

2. Poor road conditions and vehicle maintenance significantly contribute to driver injuries.

3. Implementing occupational health policies for bus drivers can reduce the rate of injuries.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on commercial bus drivers in Borno State, analyzing injury patterns, accident reports, and working conditions. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining accurate accident data due to underreporting by transport workers.

Definitions of Terms

• Bus Driver: A professional responsible for operating a bus for passenger transport.

• Injury Rate: The frequency of injuries sustained within a specific occupation or group.

• Occupational Hazard: A workplace condition that poses a risk of injury or harm to workers.
